Iranian Organization to Decorate Top Global Goal Scorer with Ali Daei Trophy
PressTV – TEHRAN, An Iranian organization is planning to award the best international goal scorer with a new prize named after the country’s soccer legend, Ali Daei.
The head of the Iranian National Sports Champions Organization said Wednesday that the prize will go to the football player who has scored the highest number of goals in international matches.
Saeed Haqverdi added that the first edition of the prize, which is named after the veteran Iranian footballer, will be awarded in January 2016. He did not give any information on the value of the prize.
Haqverdi said the decision is based on a general guideline to honor all champions, medalists and veterans in the sports history of the country.
“We should appreciate the value of our respected figures and legends; they are a major social role model for the younger generation,” Haqverdi said. Ali Daei is the world’s all-time leading goal-scorer.
Daei scored 109 goals in the 149 games he played for Iran in official matches between 1993 and 2006. The late Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskás, who remains second in the list of international goal scorers, is 25 goals behind Ali Daei.
Daei played for Iranian outfits like Persepolis before moving to Germany to play for giants like Bayern Munich. He also coached Iran’s national team between 2008 and 2009.
