Celtic’s top Dembele replacement target Sardar Azmoun speaks out on his future
HITC – GLASGOW, Celtic are keen on Sardar Azmoun and he plans to decide his future next year.
The Scottish Sun reported this summer that Celtic had lined up Sardar Azmoun as their top transfer target in case of a need to replace Moussa Dembele.
The striker ended up remaining at Celtic, although his long term future at the club will remain subject of speculation.
Azmoun’s future is no closer to being resolved either, with the attacker remaining with Russian side Rubin Kazan.
The 22-year-old has though stated his intention to move on next summer.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Azmoun said: “I want to play in the big leagues and I will make the best decision after the 2018 World Cup.
“I need to play the first team because I believe that dropping out of starting lineup for a month can harm each player’s form.”
While Azmoun may not regard Scottish football as one of the ‘big leagues’ he could move to, the club will likely be able to offer him Champions League football.
Also likely to work in their favour is his desire to play regularly, with his chances of this likely to be better than joining a side like Liverpool who he has also been linked to previously.
Azmoun will play for Iran at the World Cup next summer, and his performances there could help determine his future.
Celtic’s desire will depend on whether they feel they can hold onto Dembele.
