Queiroz optimistic on Team Melli’s WC chances
Record – LISBON, The Iranian coach is optimistic about his squad’s chances at next months global showpiece.
With less than a month to go before the start of the World Cup, Carlos Queiroz, Iran’s coach, gave a brief preview of the confrontation with the Portuguese National Team and the chances of his team moving to the ‘Round of 16’ in a group that has Spain and Portugal as favorites.
“Our chances will come from what we do on the pitch. The players will do everything in their power and I trust they can surprise” he said to the Portuguese newspaper ‘Contacto’. There was no denying that the duel against Portugal will be emotional. “I would be lying if I did not say that I preferred another opponent. For me it is not a game ‘against’ Portugal, but ‘with’ Portugal,” he pointed out.
The 65-year-old has managed to qualify for the World Cup with Iran and does not hide his desire to reach his 5th world tournament. “After 36 years of a career, it is normal to think about it after the World Cup. I am not looking for something new, but I do not put aside a project that allows me to reach the record of five qualifications,” he concluded.
