Real Sport – LONDON, France were expected to go far in the World Cup, but which nations performed beyond their means? Who impressed the most?

Modern football is individualistic. With the media obsessed by personal rivalries and legacies, the collective triumphs of a team can sometimes be pushed to the side. The World Cup, however, is different.

Entire nations sit gripped as their envoys represent them on a global stage, some better represented than others. It’s a testament to the strength in mindset of some countries that the likes of Sweden made the quarter-finals, whilst Croatia finished second. It’s impressive to say the least.

#4 Iran:

Iran at the World Cup will never be about football only. There are too many narratives to spin and too many agendas to be fed for that.

In Russia, at least the stories were positive. Female faces were a welcome sight amongst the Team Melli support, as Carlos Queiroz’s modern side impressed in close ties with Portugal and Spain.

They didn’t qualify, but they proved they were a force to be reckoned with.
