Iran to face Oman in round of 16
Persianfootball.com – ABU DHABI, Iran will play Oman in the first knockout game on Sunday evening, after the Persian Gulf state qualified as one of the best third-placed teams.
Had Lebanon scored a goal more against North Korea today, or received less yellow cards in the tournament, they would have advanced instead of Iran’s group opposition Vietnam, and have been Iran’s opponent instead.
Oman had conceded an unlucky 0-1 loss to Japan after already having suffered a 1-2 defeat to Uzbekistan, despite having been the better team. Eventually, a 3-1 win over Turkmenistan was enough to qualify.
Last time the two sides met in an Asian Cup, Iran came back from a two-goal deficit to snatch a last-minute 2-2 draw in a heated game in group stage 2004.
The winner of the match will meet the victorious team of the China versus Thailand clash in quarter finals on Thursday.
Meanwhile Saudi Arabia’s 0-2 loss to Qatar means the round of 16 will see the first Asian World Cup participant eliminated, as the Green Falcons wil now have to face group F winners Japan.
