Goal.com – Iranian side Steel Azin FC have sacked their star midfielder Ali Karimi far failing to fast during the month of Ramadan, according to the club’s official website.
A statement on the club’s official website reads:
“Steel Azin FC has been forced to sack one of its players, Ali Karimi, for being disobedient and not fasting during Ramadan.”
Karimi is the second most capped player in the nation’s history and was named that Asian Player of the Year in 2004. The 31-year-old also enjoyed a two-year spell with German giants Bayern Munich.
The club reported the sacking today; however, the Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that the club’s chairman, Hossein Hedayati, was unaware of the decision and was against Karimi’s sacking.
Karimi had been openly critical of the approach of managing director Mostafa Ajorlou in a recent interview.
Ramadan started in Iran on Thursday and under Iranian laws, all Muslims are required to observe the holy month, while those who do not fast, including non-Muslims, are expected to abstain from eating or drinking in public. Observing Ramadan involves abstaining from food and drink from dawn until sunset.
