MajidibigMNA – TEHRAN, Iran’s veteran player Farhad Majidi has quit international football, what he says, to make room for the youngsters in the national team.

“I announce my retirement from international football since I believe that the young players must be invited to the team. Many years ago, I was a victim because the veteran players didn’t give the newcomers the chance to play. Now, I don’t want to be someone like them,” the 35-year-old player said on Tuesday.

Esteghlal Captain Majidi made his debut in 1996 and played 45 times for Iran and scored 10 goals.

“Hopefully, Iran will qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil under guidance of Carlos Queiroz, with whom I feel proud of working in the national team. Iran has so many talented players,” Majidi added.

With seven goals, Majidi has been the best scorer for Esteghlal in the current Iran Professional League season.
