Esteghlal upsets IPL leader Foolad [VIDEO]

Tehran Times – TEHRAN, Esteghlal defeated the Iranian Professional League (IPL) leader Foolad 2-0 in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium on Friday.

In the 18th minute, Foolad defender Omid Khaledi brought down Esteghlal striker Omid Nazari at the penalty area.

Javad Nekounam dispatched his spot kick low into the corner.

Afterward, Foolad dominated the possession and made some chances. In the 38th minute, Leandro Chaves hit the bar from distance.

In first half stoppage time, Andranik Teymourian struck a left-foot shot from outside the area.

Elsewhere, 10-man Naft came from behind to earn a 2-1 victory over Gostaresh in its away game in Tabriz and moved up to second place of the table.

On Thursday, Damash pummeled Zob Ahan 5-1 in Rasht, Saba was held to a 2-2 draw against Mes and Sepahan suffered a 2-1 loss against Malavan in Isfahan.

Foolad is at the top of the IPL standings with 26 points, followed by Naft and Sepahan with 25 and 23 points respectively.

Esteghlal is sixth with 19 points with three games in hand.
