Iran not taking UAE encounter lightly

Loading...AFC Asian Cup – BRISBANE, Iran will have to overcome “the best team in West Asia” in the United Arab Emirates to win Group C of the AFC Asian Cup, coach Carlos Queiroz said on Sunday.
Both Iran, the top-ranked team in Asia according to FIFA, and group leaders UAE have already qualified for the quarter-finals where they will face the top sides from Group D, which includes holders Japan.
On the eve of Iran’s final group game, Queiroz, whose side trail the UAE on goal difference, spoke glowingly of his counterparts and does not expect them to play for the draw which would be good enough for the Emiratis to secure first place.
“In my opinion we will be playing the best team in West Asia,” the former Real Madrid and Portugal manager said. “They have played together for many years, been together since 17. They are a beautiful team to see.
“The Iranian fans have been fantastic in Australia. Me and my players are going to try to play a great football match, create a lot of opportunities and, of course, try to win the game.
“I have no doubt both teams will try to win. For us as well as the Emirates, a draw will not be enough.”
Esteghlal defender Khosro Heydari said the team chemistry was the point of difference for Iran, who would prefer to finish first in order to avoid Japan, who have a strong chance of winning their group, in the next round.
“We have had two difficult games,” Heydari said. “We have a real sense of team spirit, which proves the closeness between coach Queiroz and the players. We didn’t have a bunch of friendlies before the tournament but we have a fantastic sense of team spirit.
“Monday’s game is going to be more difficult than our last two. The Emirates are better than Qatar and Bahrain; they have played together for a long time and know each other very well.”
Added Queiroz: “The goal of one player is the goal of the team. The mistake of one player is the mistake of the team. Winning is the best medicine in football. We have a couple of knocks but I will make the decision on them tomorrow (Monday).”
