AFC – TASHKENT, Iran coach Mohammad Nazemosharie warned his players that China could prove a difficult opponent as the 10-time champions look to book an early spot in the quarter-finals when they meet the East Asians in their second Group B tie on Friday.

A commanding 6-0 victory over Jordan in their opening match has put Team Melli in a strong position and a win at Universal Stadium against the Chinese, who lost their opener 6-1 to Iraq, could see Nazemosharie’s side book their ticket to the knockout stage with a match to spare.

“I don’t think the scoreline in that game represented China’s quality but what was clear was that Iraq had prepared well and executed their game-plan efficiently,” said Nazemosharie.

“We played well against Jordan, a team that we respect, and now face another difficult opponent.”

Aside from the heavy nature of the loss China have other concerns with one of their most influential players, Liang Shiming, being stretchered off the court in the loss to Iraq.

“We suspect he’s suffered a broken nose and we’re not sure whether he will be available but we also now have to face the prospect of playing Asia’s best team in a match we have to win,” said China coach Shan Zhiping.

“We know it will be difficult but we are preparing as best we can.”

The day’s other Group B clash pits Iraq against Jordan with the former also looking to potentially book a spot in the knockout stages.
