Loading...Persianfootball.com – TEHRAN, A last minute volley from veteran skipper Jalal Hosseini sent Persepolis Tehran to the AFC Champions League quarter final stage on Monday.
In front of 90,000 fanatic fans at the Azadi stadium, the Reds had to make up a 2-3 defeat to Al Jazeera from the first leg and finally managed to do so thanks to the defender’s 2-1 winner.
Persepolis dominated the proceedings from the kick-off, but failed to create more than a handful scoring chances before the break.
In second half pressure on the guests from the UAE increased and finally Ahmad Nourollahi broke the deadlock with a stunning shot from outside the area.
But the Persian Gulf neighbours found the perfect answer only a few minutes later, when Romarinho’s good shot from outside the box found it’s way into the net.
The hosts responded with angry waves of attacks, but repeatedly were denied be the goalkeeper while also being unlucky twice, when Persepolis players were seemingly brought down inside the box, but the whistle kept quiet.
So it was up to 36-year-old Jalal Hosseini to slot home a rebound with only a minute left on the clock to deservingly send Persepolis into the quarter finals.
In another playoff match, Iranian teams Esteghlal and Zob Ahan will meet in Tehran on Tuesday. Zob Ahan won the first leg 1-0.
