Football London – LONDON, Plenty for Brentford to take into Tuesday’s clash against Manchester United.

Brentford certainly left it late, as they came from a goal down to beat Watford at Brentford Community Stadium.

The visitors took the lead through Emmanuel Dennis in the first half and looked set to close the gap to Brentford by just one point, but the late drama was to follow in the final 10 minutes of the second half.

Pontus Jansson headed home from Marcus Forss’ flick to score his first goal for the Bees, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring from the penalty spot in the 95th minute after Saman Ghoddos was fouled by William Trost-Ekong.

Top mentality

Brentford had started the game like a house on fire and could have easily been two goals up inside the opening twenty minutes. Shandon Baptiste, who was incredible in central midfield, almost scored in successive league games but saw his effort tipped over by Daniel Bachmann. Bryan Mbeumo went very close with a curling effort but was also foiled by the Austrian shortly after.

For the Bees’ dominance, it was Watford who took the lead with their first real chance of the contest. It was harsh on the Bees who didn’t deserve to trail, but they raised their game at the best possible time to get a victory that was there for the taking which delighted Thomas Frank.

Mbeumo’s special moment

The Frenchman has become one of the unluckiest players in the league, hitting the woodwork nine times already so far. Before yesterday, he only had two goals to his name. He came close in the first half with a curling effort which Bachmann kept out, and as always, he never stopped fighting for the cause.

His last goal was against West Ham in early October, and it appeared his goal drought would be prolonged even further. However, a penalty gave him the opportunity to break it and give Brentford victory. He stepped up and slotted home into the bottom right corner to spark delirious scenes around the stadium, apart from the corner of Watford fans who displayed a mass exodus towards the exit.

Forss and Ghoddos step up

Marcus Forss and Saman Ghoddos haven’t had the desired game-time they would have liked, but both of them contributed big time to help Brentford earn a hard-earned victory. Forss’ flick paved the way to Jansson’s first goal for the club, with Frank praising Finn’s mentality after being close to selection for Leeds.

Ghoddos brought some much-needed energy to Brentford’s midfield, with Frank also revealing the Iranian was also deployed at left wing-back as well as a number 10. He won the penalty which gave Brentford a valuable victory, and the duo was positive in the defeat to Chelsea in October and was unlucky not to make things happen, but they certainly had lady luck on their side last night.

Fernandez’s big save

Álvaro Fernández had a moment to forget last week when his spilled cross lead to a corner which saw Leeds equalize late on from Patrick Bamford. There was nothing he could have done for Watford’s opening goal, but there was a huge moment from the Spaniard that could turn the game in the visitors’ favor.

The Bees were 0-1 down at the time and were huffing and puffing to try and get themselves a route back into the contest. The Hornets broke forward, with the ball falling to Josh King but Fernández stood strong to deny the Norwegian. Had it found its way in, it would have been difficult for Brentford to get themselves something from the contest.

Confidence for Manchester United

The Bees won’t have too much time to relax, as they have the small matter of welcoming Manchester United to TW8 on Tuesday night. However, this win will give them plenty of confidence ahead of the meeting against Ralf Rangnick’s side. Tuesday night will be the first time the two have met since 1975, with Brentford wanting to add another big scalp.

The Bees have already done themselves justice in terms of their performances against Arsenal and Liverpool and will relish coming up against United. They will pose a much different challenge as opposed to Leeds and Watford, but it’s a challenge Frank will be looking forward to.
