    Iran's record

    Hello everyone.
Today, I had the privilege of becoming the newest member of the PFDC family. Privilege because I am now among some of the most brightest and most knowledgeable individuals who have the deepest of love and affection towards Iran and the Iranian football. Believe me friends when I say that for the past 10 years, I have been spending at least 30 minutes each and everyday reading most of your comments on different threads and subjects. But because of a small technical issue that I was not able to fix until today, I could not become a member.
And so now that I am here, I can not wait to make my presence felt by bringing up a subject which has yet to be discussed in this forum. Although this subject looks totally negative, I bring it up from a positive perspective so that less than 2 weeks away from our first match against Morocco, we know where we stand and what our chances of getting into knock out stage are.
And so with your permission, this is the subject; With 8 losses, 3 draws and only one victory, and having conceded 22 goals while scoring only 7 goals in a total of 12 matches, Iran's total record in the past 4 world cups have arguably been the worst among all of the participating countries since the very first world cup in 1930 in Uruguay and up until the recent one in Brazil in 2014.
Although this record looks really unimpressive, it is not the entire story. There are positive things that happened among some of those 8 loses that we suffered which I wouldn't mind to discuss. But I would really like to have a one or two responses on the subject from any member if possible.

First off, welcome to PFDC! Glad to have another contributing member on the board On the quoted portion of the post, I want to point out that this is only partially true, as there have been a number of nations (ex, Iceland) who hardly had any WC appearances to begin with. However, you are absolutely right in that Iran has generally had an abysmal showing at the world stage. I think this can be attributed to a number of factors. Inexperience at the top level (1978), bad luck (1998), mis-management (2006), lack of quality players (2014) and potentially in this coming series, opposition that is simply too tough to beat. One thing to consider though is our football's deficiencies at the international stage can generally be traced to deficiencies in the structure of our footballing system as a whole--from the youth level all the way to the top flight. Progress will take time, and much of our system needs reform. But I will say that there have been a couple inches of improvement for Iranian football as a whole over the past 6-7 years, so there's reason to be optimistic.

      Welcome to our forum!

What a good way to start the first thread!
I would like to think we have learned from our defeats but also became morally stronger in pursuing our goals.
In the past we participated in WCs to "learn something", now we are participating to "prove something".
When you are there to learn you have more respect for opponents and also fear, but when you are there to prove you have no fear at all but eagerness!
I think after 4 WC participation and with this young squad, we are finally at the stage of not shying away and go for it!

I think the numbers only show part of the story and hopefully this is the cup that we can use all weve experienced to make it further this time.

out of curiosity what was the technical issue that kept you out for 10 years!!!

Two of my yahoo e mails were being blocked by the site and for the longest time I refused to get another email address . But today I was able to register in the site using my brand new g mail address.
I totally agree with you that numbers only show part of the story and I was gonna get into those losses that we have had in more details and possibly why this time we can experience a better world cup.

It is really weird and cool at the same time to hear a response from you because I have been reading most of your comments and specially your recent articles about the different preparations that team Meli has had over the years. And as one of the original members of this forum, you are now responding to me. It means a lot to me, thank you.

Thank you for kind words . It is good that you are seeing the general effects of the failures that Iran has suffered in the 4 previous world cups. I totally agree that in 2006 for example, the mismanagement and lack of unity in the team which had started months before the start of the first game against Mexico with major issues that the head of the sports ministry Ali Abadi had with the head of the IFF Mohammad Dadkan and had gone down and penetrated inside the team creating divisions between some players with one another in one hand and with the coaching staff in the other. In 2014, we didn't have the quality that we had in 2006, so you are right about 2014 also. And of course 1978 was our first appearance, so we couldn't expect much from our players. In the the game against Yugoslavia in 98, have we had Abedzadeh in goal, perhaps the out come of the game would be totally different.

Thank you brother. It is unfortunately true. With this record, unless you are an Iranian, there is no reason what so ever for any non Iranian football fans around the world to be a fan of Iran.

But I strongly believe that four out of those eight losses could have a different result had luck been towards our side rather on the side of our opponents. Against Peru in 78, against Yugoslavia in 98, against Mexico in 2006 and of course against Argentina in 2014, we did not deserve to lose, but we had no luck.

                      Welcome to PFDC!
Now tell us, are Iranians sefid or siah?

                      Just joking.
You could say that we through 10 years away with the revolution and the war and only start counting from 1998, but that wouldn't make our record impressive either.
Hopefully we can do something about it this time around.

The positive thing that we have to remember is that since our game against Yugoslavia in 98 and apart from our 3-1 loss against Bosnia in 2014, all of our losses happened in the second half. Another word, against Yugoslavia, Germany, Mexico, Portugal and Argentina, we finished the half while the score was equal. We gave up the games in the second half due to lack of experience and sometimes lack of fitness. What this means is that our opponents only managed to defeat us because we had no idea on how to finish the game psychologically and not because our opponents were stronger than us in terms of playing superior football.

                          Thank you brother.
As you said, hopefully we can this time around. If we go back and look at the record of the other participating teams in the previous world cups, we can see that apart from Scotland which has yet to get in the knock out stage after appearing in staggering 8 times, all the other nations have managed to get to the second round after appearing 4 or 5 times.
North and South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Morocco, Costa Rica, Norway, Turkey, Senegal, Algeria, Greece have all been in the second round of the competition at least once after appearing a few world cups. So perhaps, this time with our fifth appearance, we'll be celebrating our first knock out stage birth.

Looking at our poor record, our aim this World Cup should be beating Morocco.

That would be a successful World Cup.

I think we can all agree that our current TM is the best we have ever had in any of the WCs.
However I do believe that our group is also the toughest we have ever had and
Defenitly the group of death in this WC.
So god help us , we need some luck.
